When a healthy sperm penetrates the tough outer shell zona pellucida surrounding an egg, it triggers a cascade of events leading to the fusion of their genetic material into structures called pronuclei. Upon entry, sperm block further entry by altering the egg's shell structure.

The next stage involves the rapid cell division and growth as the embryo progresses from a single cell to an inside mass of about 50-100 cells by days four to six. The blastocyte stage – characterized by its hollow center with growing embryo at the inner part and early placenta on the outer shell – emerges.

After fertilization, the embryo travels down the Fallopian tubes before implanting into the uterus' ometrium on days five or six. It breaks free of its shell to establish direct contact with the uterine lining through hormonal exchanges that bond it to the mother's bloodstream via a developing placenta. Some women experience mild spotting during this process.

The successful completion of these steps represents a significant milestone in pregnancy, with hormone levels increasing around two weeks post-fertilization for easy detection by a pregnancy test. The journey continues as the rapidly transforming embryo develops specialized cells and structures.
