In vitro fertilization: Advantages and disadvantages for fertility treatment

Read: 1358

IVF, or In Vitro Fertilization, involves using medications to stimulate egg development and release in women. Eggs are then collected alongside sperm which are placed together in a laboratory dish for fertilization before being implanted directly into the uterus. Here’s looking at the advantages and disadvantages of IVF:

Advantages

No Need for Fallopian Tubes

IVF offers hope where fallopian tubes, often blocked due to conditions such as appicitis or chlamydia, are unable to support natural conception. With IVF, eggs from the ovaries can be used directly without reliance on functional fallopian tubes because it bypasses these in favor of fertilization and implantation into the uterus.

Sperm Quality Issues

For couples struggling with low sperm count or poor quality sperm, Intrauterine Insemination IUI may not offer viable options for most cases. However, IVF has an Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection ICSI method that injects sperm directly into the egg, increasing the chances of successful fertilization.

Reduced Risk of Genetic Disorders

Some couples might be at risk of conceiving a baby with genetic abnormalities due to specific gene carryings from either partner. IVF allows for testing on embryos before they're implanted, thereby reducing the possibility of having offspring affected by genetic conditions that could have been passed down from their parents.

Disadvantages

Increased Risk of Multiples

The goal of fertility treatment is often a single baby at a time. However, with IVF, there's a chance two babies may be conceived due to an embryo splitting despite only transferring one into the uterus. This can result in a pregnancy with twins or even more.

Fewer Eggs Than Expected

Not every follicle from which eggs are collected actually yields an egg. About 80-90 of these do, but sometimes fewer eggs than anticipated will be collected. In some instances, no eggs might be collected at all.

Emotional Stress and Physical Demands

IVF can be a taxing emotional process. It's physically demanding as well, so it is important for patients to prioritize mental health during this period.
